Setting up a company

Below is a summary of the steps to set up your own company in Spain, not all the pages are available in English but hopefully this can help you get started.

First things you’ll need is to get your NIE (Foreigner’s Identification Number). This is your Foreigner’s Identification Number. You’ll also need to get your company name officially reserved through the Registro Mercantil Central.

Next, you’ll open a Spanish bank account for the company and deposit the minimum required share capital (capital social)in your chosen bank, which is €3,000 for an SL (Sociedad Limitada).

With that in place, you’ll draft the articles of association (estatutos sociales), which are the rules for how your business will run. A notary public, known in Spain as a notario, will then formalize these documents into a public deed of incorporation (escritura pública de constitución).

Once this is complete, you’ll register the company with the tax office (Agencia Tributaria) to get your company tax ID (Número de Identificación Fiscal or NIF). You’ll also register with the Mercantile Registry (Registro Mercantil). The final step is to get your company and its employees registered with the Social Security Treasury (Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social).
