Getting your car’s ITV renewed

I recently had to renew my car’s ITV so I thought I would do a blog post about it, as I was a bit nervous about the process going into it.

Firstly, what is an ITV? It stands for Inspección Técnica de Vehículos and it ensures cars meet safety and environmental standards. New cars are tested after 4 years, then every 2 years until your car is 10 years old, and then it gets tested every year after that.

STEP 1

The first thing we did was get our car checked by our local garage to make sure everything was working and that it would pass the ITV test. Most garages call it a ‘Pre ITV’.

They will check everything that the ITV test will check so:

Emissions and Noise: A gas test for 𝐶𝑂2 levels

Safety Critical Systems: Extensive checking of the braking system (pads, discs, fluid), tire condition and type, suspension, and steering.

Visibility & Lighting: Inspection of headlights (beam alignment), indicators, brake lights, mirrors, and windshield wipers + fluid.

Interior & Structure: Functionality of doors, windows, seat belts, and seat attachments.

Yo then need to make sure you have all the necessary documents needed for the test. Documents needed are:

Permiso de Circulación – the vehicle’s registration certificate.

Tarjeta ITV (Ficha Técnica) – the technical inspection card.

Proof of Insurance – though often checked electronically, it is recommended to bring the latest premium payment receipt.

Identification – your DNI, NIE, or Passport

STEP 2

I then went onto the website and booked the test. If you’re in Mallorca, you can book your test here: https://itevebasa.com/estaciones/estaciones-baleares/

STEP 3

Arrive at the test early (15 minutes) and go into the office to check your documents. They will check everything and then you’ll pay – we payed €21. We then got told what line to drive to and then waited our turn. We waited for about 30 minutes before we got checked. When its your turn, you will get asked to turn your indicators, check the break lights, they check the seat belts and then you get out of the car for them to do further checks. I had a Spanish friend with me which translated for me but I think you could manage the appointment if you don’t speak Spanish. The test takes about 15-20 minutes.

If you have passed, they will print out your new sticker then and there and you can put it right on your car.

It was all pretty straightforward, but if you have any questions on any of the above please don’t hesitate to reach out.
